Do you go about your day thinking thoughts like, ‘this is so boring,’ or ‘this is killing me?” These phrases may seem like nothing, but they are extremely powerful and have a huge effect on your life.
Imagine it’s the night before your end of year math exam, and you tell yourself repeatedly the facts and formulas you have to remember, then go over your textbook a thousand times. But you imagine yourself showing up to the exam tomorrow, sitting down in your chair, starting the exam and completely forgetting everything you memorised. You also tell yourself that this exam is going to be so hard and you’re going to mind blank like always and you’re just going to fail. The night goes on and you roll around in your bed with these thoughts going through your head on constant repeat. You wake up in the morning tired and sluggish, prepared to face your failure. Then the time for the exam comes, you open up to the first page and can’t remember anything, you’ve completely mind blanked, and you tell yourself things like I knew this would happen, I’m just a failure and I always mind blank. The problem with this is that no matter how much you study, you’ll mind blank, because that is what you imagined happening and told yourself would happen. The way you feel and respond to anything is created by the words you tell yourself and the pictures you create in your mind.
Your mind does what it thinks you want and what it truly believes is in your best interest. When you’ve got an assessment due in a week, and you haven’t started, you’ll probably tell yourself things like, ‘I wish I could just have this week off work and no one to interrupt me so I can get this assessment done.’ And your mind says, ok I’ll give you the flu, so you have a week off work and no one will want to be around you. You’re probably thinking, but that’s not what I meant, although your brain doesn’t know that, and it will do what it thinks you want whether it is good for you or not.
Your mindset is the reason why you do and don’t like things. We all need to stop telling ourselves negative things because it is only destroying us and does nothing good in our lives. The reason you hate school is because you think it’s boring and imagine sitting there while the teacher babbles on about things, although if you imagined having so much fun learning new things and getting to hang out with your friends you will start to see school in a different light. The reason you hate your workplace is that you imagine all the people there that don’t make you feel good but not the people that do make you feel good. Once you change your perspective and mindset, your overall life won’t be the same.
I challenge you to think of one thing that you hate and try to see it in a different way and change your mindset towards it. Don’t let a bad mindset and perspective get the best of you.
